Hello, here’s a guide to the highlights of Mt. Takao in Tokyo Metropolis. You may have heard of Michelin, but first let us introduce a mountain walk that delights all five senses. In the morning you’ll notice the scent of the trees and birdsong; in the afternoon the aroma of soba drifts from the teahouses. Climbing the stone steps brings you into the solemn atmosphere of Takaosan Yakuoin Temple, where you can take a slow, respectful walk along the approach and offer your prayers. Takaosan Yakuoin Temple Address: 2177 Takaomachi, Hachioji City, Tokyo Metropolis 193-8686 Highlights: the Niomon gate, Daishidou, the 108 Steps, Octopus Cedar (Takosugi), the Bussarito Pagoda, and other temple buildings and historic sites to enjoy. When visiting, walk considerately around others so you can enjoy a calm experience. Using the cable car or lift lets you tailor the walk to your fitness level. On clear days you can see the Tokyo skyline and seasonal flowers. Pause at a mountainside teahouse to taste tororo soba or dango and catch your breath. There are many photo spots, so bring extra battery power. The approach has some uneven sections, so wear comfortable shoes and take your time. Bringing drinks and warm clothing is reassuring. Don’t forget comfortable shoes, a drink, and your camera. We look forward to your visit! Please come and enjoy your time here 🙂

Ukai Toriyama, a must-remember gourmet spot in Hachioji, is a traditional restaurant in the mountain village of Takao where you can enjoy gardens and charcoal-grilled cuisine. In detached tatami rooms and charming gassho-zukuri–style buildings, you can leisurely savor the toasty aroma unique to irori charcoal grilling and seasonal dishes. It’s perfect not only for food-focused visits but also for relaxed business dinners or special occasions. 🍂 Passing through the noren, a tranquil Japanese garden unfolds, giving you time to stroll the grounds and enjoy the views after your meal. The savory flavor of chicken grilled with a secret sauce and the scent of charcoal leave a lasting impression, and the picturesque atmosphere makes for great photos, so don’t forget your camera. 📷 Easy to combine with Takao sightseeing, Mt. Takao offers casual hiking and nature walks. Paved paths and forest trails let you choose a route to match your fitness and schedule. Using the cable car or lift makes for a manageable outing, and after enjoying seasonal views from the summit or observation points, you can take your time for a leisurely meal. 🥾 During busy seasons, leaving early or visiting on weekday mornings is often more comfortable, so adjusting your timing is a good way to avoid crowds. Bring comfortable walking shoes and a drink, and if you want photos, scout the roadside viewpoints and areas around the summit in advance. It’s wise to check access from the Station and any shuttle services ahead of time for peace of mind. When you visit, please confirm the latest opening hours and reservation status from official sources. ✨ Combine a nature walk on Mt. Takao with a meal in the garden for a relaxed day-trip plan. Feel free to stop by—we look forward to your visit. Hachioji Ukai Toriyama Hiking

Goubara-shuku was the first post town on the Zenkoji Kaido after it split from the Nakasendo at Shima-juku. It was established in 1614 (Keicho 19) when Ogasawara Hidemasa, lord of Matsumoto Castle, developed the Zenkoji Kaido (Hokkokuwaki Oukan) to connect Shima-juku on the Nakasendo with the Kitakuni Highway. The post town was not formed from an existing settlement. The original Goubara village lay on the east bank of the Narai River in Ueno Chiseki, but when the post station was developed, it and the Katakaishi Settlement, then on the river’s west bank in Sumito Chiseki, were moved to the present site around 1619 (Genna 5) to create the post town.

Goubara-shuku is the first post town on the Zenkoji Kaido after it splits from the Nakasendo at Seba-juku. It was established in Keicho 19 (1614) when Hidemasa Ogasawara, lord of Matsumoto Castle, improved the Zenkoji Kaido (the Hokkokuwaki Oukan) to connect Seba-juku on the Nakasendo with the Kitakuni Highway. Rather than an existing hamlet simply becoming the post town, Goubara’s original settlement stood in Ueno Chiseki on the east bank of the Narai River. When the post station was developed, the settlement was relocated around Genna 5 (c.1619) with the Katakaishi settlement from Sumito Chiseki on the river’s west bank to form the new post town at its present site.

Mindfulness tourism took place at Kikuchi Valley in Kikuchi City, Kumamoto Prefecture. We offered the ultimate retreat in the clear streams of nature to maximize mental and physical performance. Leaving the noise of daily life behind, participants enjoyed a special experience that sharpened the five senses while feeling the breath of nature. We practiced mindfulness walking incorporating meditation and breathing techniques. Participants walked Kikuchi Valley together with a head priest. At each spot, people quietly faced nature by lying on rocks or sitting in zazen. In the calm atmosphere, participants refreshed their minds and bodies and found new insights. On the first day we held “Mindfulness Walking and Tea Ceremony.” A tea master conducted a tea ceremony within Kikuchi Valley. The ceremony used water from Kikuchi Valley. In the tranquil morning space, participants calmed their minds and quietly enjoyed delicious tea. On the second day participants experienced “Mindfulness Walking and Breakfast.” They ate breakfast in a crisp morning setting while sensing nature. They enjoyed the meal in a relaxed and peaceful state. The dishes used the soft water of Kikuchi Valley and featured donabe-cooked rice and local ingredients from Kikuchi. Everyone seemed to enjoy the program. Walking in the morning and touching nature helped them forget work worries and busyness. The tea ceremony’s preparation soothed tired bodies, and the sound of the clear stream sharpened both hearing and taste. Meditating in nature while listening to the babbling river and cool air felt pleasant. Newly harvested rice cooked in a clay pot and nameko mushroom soup warmed body and soul. The dishes were carefully prepared and truly delicious, leaving participants fully satisfied. We received many similar comments. It was a luxurious time to experience Kikuchi’s food, nature, and moments of self-reflection with all the senses. Rather than letting a day pass unnoticed, participants were able to spend time in nature solely for themselves.
