Nice to meet you! Tokachi Tourism Federation. We are pleased to share highlights from Tokachi, Hokkaido, a region blessed with vast landscapes and stunning nature. First, here is some basic information about Tokachi. Tokachi comprises 19 municipalities, centered on Obihiro City. "The 19 municipalities of Tokachi" Obihiro City, Otofukecho, Shihorocho, Kamishihoro Town, Shikaoicho, Shintoku Town, Shimizucho, Memuro Town, Nakasatsunaimura, Sarabetsumura, Taiki Town, Hirocho, Makubetsu, Ikeda Town, Toyokorocho, Hombetsucho, Ashorocho, Rikubetsucho, Urahorocho The name Tokachi comes from the Ainu word Tokapchi, which referred to the Tokachi River. Tokachi has a continental climate, so spring and summer temperatures are relatively high for Hokkaido. Winters can drop to around minus 30 degrees Celsius, but the region sees less snow and many sunny days. The main way to access Tokachi is by air via Tokachi Obihiro Airport. Flights from HanedaKuukou take about 1.5 hours, and from Nagoya Chubu about 1 hour 45 minutes. By train, the fastest trip from Sapporo to JR Obihiro Station takes about 2 hours 24 minutes. Tokachi is a treasure trove of nature, with each of its 19 municipalities offering diverse attractions where you can enjoy beautiful scenery and wildlife. In this post we introduce some of the area's popular sightseeing spots. Banei Tokachi (Obihiro Racecourse) in Obihiro City is the only racecourse in the world that hosts ban’ei horse racing, where horses pull heavy sleds. Ban’ei races test strength, speed, and endurance. The dramatic sight of horses running a 200-meter course is a must-see. The racecourse also has a petting zoo where visitors can meet ponies and rabbits; it is open even on non-race days. Next is Tokachi Hills in Makubetsu. This hilltop complex blends nature and gardens with a focus on agriculture and food. You can enjoy themed gardens filled with roses, herbs, and other flowers year-round. The garden café serves unique dishes you can only find here, such as sandwiches made with the world’s only heritage edible pork, Mangalitsa. Nearby attractions around Tokachi Hills include Kofuku Station, about 20 minutes by car. Kofuku Station, famous in the 1970s for the slogan "From the Land of Love to Happiness," remains a popular lovers’ shrine where couples wish for happiness. From late April to the end of November, the Kofuku Station Happy Ceremony offers a mock wedding experience. Aikoku Station, which sparked a similar boom, is about 15 minutes by car from Kofuku Station. It now serves as the Traffic Memorial Museum, and the "Happiness-bound" ticket monument in front of the station building is a recommended photo spot. Tokachigawa Onsen, about 25 minutes by car from Tokachi Hills, sits on the banks of the Tokachi River. The area’s moor hot springs, selected as a Hokkaido heritage, are rare plant-derived baths in Japan. Moor springs are said to help with neuralgia, muscle pain, joint pain, chronic gynecological conditions, and poor circulation. Some nearby hotels offer day-use bathing. Soak in the hot springs surrounded by beautiful nature to relieve daily fatigue. The Tokachi area has 15 roadside stations that offer local specialties, gourmet food, and tourist information (as of July 2023). Roadside Station Ashoro Ginga Hall 21 in Ashorocho was renovated from a railway station in 2011 and still retains railway atmosphere. The shop and bakery sell products made with the town’s specialty, the exceptionally large rawan-buki butterbur, and the restaurant offers local treats such as rawan-buki soft serve. Don’t miss the local specialty butadon available at Kumanoko Regional Exchange Product Center Store. Roadside stations let you enjoy regional foods and specialties unique to each area. Please stop by for memories of your trip. Next, we introduce spots where you can experience Hokkaido’s vast nature. Lake Onneto, one of Hokkaido’s three hidden lakes, lies at the western edge of Akan-Mashu National Park. The lake changes color by season and time of day, earning it the nickname "Goshikinuma" or Five-Color Pond. An observation deck with views of MtMeakan and Mount Akanfuji is a recommended viewpoint. In Kamishihoro Town, the Taushubetsu River Bridge at Lake Nukabira is a 130-meter concrete arch bridge built in 1937. About 60 arch bridges of various sizes once formed part of the Japanese National Railways Shihoro Line and are preserved as modern industrial heritage. In spring, melting snow raises the water level so the arches reflect on the surface, earning it the nickname "Megane Bridge" or Spectacle Bridge. Mikuni Pass in Daisetsuzan National Park (Kamishihoro Town) sits at 1,139 meters and is the highest pass in Hokkaido. You will be captivated by the sea of fresh green trees in spring and vivid autumn leaves. At the summit, Mikuni Pass Cafe is popular for its carefully prepared hand-drip coffee made from its own roasted beans. Finally, Tokachi Ranch in Otofukecho covers a vast area of 4,092 hectares. The ranch raises Dosanko horses, sheep, and cattle. A popular spot is the roughly 1.3-kilometer birch tree avenue that stretches from the ranch entrance. Tokachi hosts events throughout the year. The Tokachi Port Festival’s Tokachi Port Sea Fireworks Festival in Hirocho is the only harbor fireworks display in the Tokachi region. Underwater fireworks that spread across the sea surface are a highlight. The 2023 event was scheduled for August 5. The summer Obihiro Heigen Matsuri, autumn Obihiro Chrysanthemum Festival, and winter Obihiro Ice Festival are known as the three major Obihiro festivals. The Kachimai Fireworks Festival held on the Tokachigawa Riverbed is noted for its highly entertaining program. Enjoy a fireworks show woven together with music and lighting. The 2023 event was scheduled for August 13. Tokachi, Hokkaido, is a region rich in vast nature, gourmet food, hot springs, and attractions that blend harmoniously. We will continue to share more Tokachi sightseeing spots, events, and gourmet information that we could not cover in this post! Please look forward to future updates!

In September, I rode a 16-inch mini velo across the Shikoku Mountains from Kochi to Matsuyama From Kochi I followed the Niyodo River, climbed steep grades, and kept climbing until I finally reached the Shikoku Karst The view there was so vast that I felt a lifelong, unforgettable thrill along with the achievement of reaching Shikoku’s ceiling by my own effort On the Kochi Prefecture–Ehime Prefecture border, the karst terrain jutted up at 1,400 meters, looking like somewhere other than Japan, yet when I shifted my gaze sideways the steep, characteristically Japanese peaks rose up and I was reminded that I was indeed in Japan Pale blue, white, and green formed a contrast that seemed to symbolize summer, and ridgelines stretched east and west as far as the eye could see Summer in Shikoku was unbeatable That night I cooked dinner, rolled out my sleeping bag, and took a short nap At 10:00 p.m. I sensed something and crawled out of the tent to find a sky full of stars in every direction From the cloudless Shikoku Mountains the Milky Way rose up In my just-over-twenty years of life, that was by far the most beautiful Milky Way I have ever seen I had come to Shikoku alone, carrying heavy camping gear on a small-wheeled bike, enduring the fierce heat and hardship to finally reach this place—perhaps that made the view all the more moving Will I ever encounter such a sense of wonder again in my life? Maybe I travel by bicycle to seek out encounters like that More than comfort, stability, or security, I want the overwhelming exhilaration of being moved For that, I feel I can overcome any hardship by my own strength Because this is Japan, I hope more people can experience everything that bicycle travel can offer

Introducing an autumn foliage video of MtNasu (MtChausudake) in Nikko National Park, Nasu District, Tochigi Prefecture. Photos: MtNasu (MtChausudake) in autumn, Tochigi Prefecture. This time we feature a video by Zekkei Channel titled "[4K] Nikko National Park: Autumn Leaves at MtNasu — Kanto’s No.1 Foliage Spot 2020." MtNasu (MtChausudake) ranks among the best places for autumn color in the Kanto region. The mountain sits in Nikko National Park in Tochigi Prefecture. What makes the autumn leaves here special is that you can enjoy spectacular color while hiking. The dramatic silhouette of MtNasu (MtChausudake) paired with blazing red foliage, as shown in the video, will make you want to see it in person. First, enjoy the beautiful 4K footage capturing the autumn colors. What kind of mountain is MtNasu (MtChausudake)? When is the best time to see fall color? MtNasu is the main peak of the Nasu Mountain Range, a volcanic group centered on the Nasu Goyo peaks, and is also known as MtChausudake. It is one of the 100 Famous Mountains of Japan. Located in the northwest of Nasumachi in Nasu District, Tochigi Prefecture, MtChausudake rises to 1,915 meters. Together with Mt. Asahi to the north, it offers autumn color from species such as Japanese maple and Enkianthus. As an active volcano, you can still smell sulfur in the air. The best foliage season usually runs from late September to early October. A ropeway makes the mountain accessible to a wide range of hikers, from beginners to experienced climbers, and thousands visit every year. Highlights of MtNasu (MtChausudake) autumn color — top scenic spots The star attraction is the contrast between the active volcanic peak of MtChausudake and the fiery red of the surrounding leaves. The tree-lined slopes up to the summit make for an unforgettable sight. Video 1:33– A spectacular view of autumn color seen during the climb of MtNasu (MtChausudake) The view from the summit is nothing short of breathtaking. You will be stunned by the town unfolding below, the red-dyed forests and the full 360-degree panorama. A maintained trail circles the crater, so you can walk around the rim. Climbers call this circuit "o-hachi meguri." If you visit during the foliage season, do not miss the views from Ubagadaira. The combination of volcanic steam rising from MtChausudake and the glowing red leaves is truly moving and highly photogenic. Video 5:57– Ubagadaira at the foot of MtNasu (MtChausudake) Recommended routes and clothing for first-time autumn hikers at MtNasu (MtChausudake) Autumn hiking at MtNasu suits everyone from beginners to serious climbers. The mountain offers routes of varying difficulty, but beginners will especially appreciate the ropeway. If you want to enjoy fall color without attempting a full alpine climb, take the ropeway. From Nasu Ropeway Summit Station to the summit of MtNasu (MtChausudake) is about a 50-minute one-way hike. It’s an easy route that lets you enjoy the foliage as you go. Weather and clothing for hiking during the foliage season In the peak season, from late September through October, temperatures typically hover around 10°C. Mornings and evenings are chilly, and it can be very windy at the summit. Wear layers and bring an easily removable outer layer so you can regulate your body temperature. Choose trekking boots or other sturdy hiking shoes, and carry rain gear because mountain weather can change quickly. Beginners’ tip: ride the ropeway to reach the 9th station in about four minutes! Fees and how to get to the ropeway boarding area If you drive to the trailhead, three parking areas serve visitors: Nasu Ropeway Parking — 175 spaces Nasu-dake Tōge no Chaya Daiichi Parking Area and Mount Nasu Toge-no-Chaya No. 2 Parking Lot — 167 spaces total Daimaru Parking Lot — 160 spaces Round-trip ropeway fares are 1,800 yen for adults (junior high school and older) and 900 yen for children (ages 3 to elementary school). During peak foliage the ropeway itself offers beautiful views, so it’s a great option for visitors who want to enjoy the leaves as a scenic ride. The ropeway runs from Nasu Ropeway Sanroku Station to Nasu Ropeway Summit Station in about four minutes, delivering you to the 9th station in no time. Summary: MtNasu (MtChausudake) autumn color The white volcanic steam and dark rock set off the brilliant autumn leaves, creating a landscape you may want to see at least once in your life. Expect crowds during the foliage season. Before you go, check the weather forecast, the color report and parking conditions via live cameras when possible. After your hike, consider soaking in a hot spring to ease tired muscles. Kyukamura Nasu offers day-use hot spring bathing. Nikko National Park includes MtNasu and many other natural attractions. When you visit Tochigi Prefecture, take the time to experience its rich natural beauty. TripAdvisor: MtNasu (MtChausudake)

Long ago, a large peach floated down the upper reaches of a river in Okayama. An elderly couple took it home and split it open, and inside they found a healthy baby boy. They named him Momotaro, meaning 'Peach Boy.' He grew quickly, and one day he decided to go to Onigashima to defeat the oni (demons) who were terrorizing the village. The old couple gave him kibidango (millet dumplings), and along the way he shared them with a dog, a monkey, and a pheasant, who joined him. The four of them joined forces and fought a fierce battle with the oni on Onigashima, finally forcing the leader to surrender. The oni returned the treasures they had stolen, and Momotaro and his companions returned to the village bearing the spoils as proof of their victory. The villagers rejoiced, and Momotaro lived happily with the elderly couple. This classic Japanese folktale teaches the importance of courage, justice, and working together with friends.

From late September through October, daytime temperatures often hover around 10°C near peak season. Mornings and evenings can be cold, and strong winds sometimes reach the summit, so wear layers and bring an easily removable outer layer to adjust your body temperature. Wear sturdy hiking boots or trekking shoes, and bring rain gear because mountain weather can change quickly. Beginner tip: the ropeway takes you to the ninth station in about four minutes — a quick lift for those who prefer an easier route. Below are access details and parking information. Photos: Mt. Nasu and the Nasu Ropeway, Tochigi Prefecture If you drive to the trailhead, there are three parking areas: ・Nasu Ropeway parking — 175 spaces ・Mount Nasu Toge-no-Chaya Daiichi and Second Parking Areas — 167 spaces ・Daimaru Parking Lot — 160 spaces Ropeway fares are round-trip: adults (junior high school students and older) 1,800 yen; children (ages 3 to elementary school) 900 yen. During peak foliage you can enjoy beautiful colors from inside the ropeway, so it’s highly recommended for sightseers as well. The ropeway ride from Nasu Ropeway Sanroku Station to the summit station takes about four minutes, delivering you quickly to the ninth station of Mt. Chausudake. Summary — Autumn foliage at Mt. Nasu (Mt. Chausudake) Photos: Mt. Chausudake (Mt. Nasu) in autumn, Tochigi Prefecture Against the white plumes of steam and the dark volcanic slopes, the fall colors look dazzling. Many visitors describe the view as a once-in-a-lifetime scene. Expect crowds during peak foliage. Before you go, check the weather forecast and, if possible, live cameras for leaf color and parking status. After your hike, relax at a hot spring to soothe tired muscles. Kyukamura Nasu offers day-use hot spring baths. Nikko National Park has many natural spots beyond Mt. Nasu, so when you visit Tochigi Prefecture, take time to enjoy its varied landscapes. Gion Shrine Autumn Festival — Okunchi Festival On Thursday, October 9th, the Gion Shrine autumn festival, the Okunchi Festival, was held in Kuraoka.⛩ It took place under warm, sunny skies.🌞 Traditional performances were offered, including kagura (a sacred Shinto dance), the usu-daiko drum dance (usu-daiko, a traditional mortar-drum dance), and yamabushi dialogues (exchanges by mountain ascetics).✨ The usu-daiko dance welcomed impromptu participants, and many people joined in.😊 Each time local residents and visitors from other prefectures form a circle and perform the same dance together, I am moved to tears.😭 This year also saw the revival of gankake kagura (a wish-offering kagura).👹 The powerful yet solemn dance, which preserves the original custom called the Festival of Fulfilled Wishes, stirred our hearts.💖 Having kagura performed as a way to make a wish is such a beautiful tradition.✨ Everyone, please come to Gokase's autumn festival next year! Walk-ins and impromptu participants are very welcome.🙌

Once upon a time, a large peach floated down the river in Okayama. An elderly couple found it and, upon opening it, discovered a healthy baby boy inside. They named him Momotaro, meaning 'peach boy.' As he grew, Momotaro decided to journey to Onigashima to defeat the ogres terrorizing the village. The old woman prepared millet dumplings for him. Along the way, he met a dog, a monkey, and a pheasant, each of whom joined him after receiving a millet dumpling. Together, they confronted the ogres in a fierce battle, eventually defeating their leader. The ogres returned the stolen treasures, and Momotaro and his companions returned to the village as heroes. The villagers rejoiced, and Momotaro lived happily with the elderly couple. This tale is a classic Japanese story that teaches the values of courage, justice, and teamwork.

The turtle was slowly walking along the road. He was on his way home to his house by the pond. At that moment, the rabbit hopped over and said, "Turtle, you're really slow. At this rate, the sun will set before you get home." The turtle replied angrily, "I can run very fast when I need to." The rabbit laughed and said, "When would that be?" After thinking for a moment, the rabbit said, "Alright, let's have a race to the top of that hill tomorrow morning. Whoever gets there first wins." "Understood. Let's race." The turtle replied. The next morning, the turtle and the rabbit lined up, ready to race to the top of the hill. The rabbit hopped over the river, passed through the forest, and ran across the field. When he reached the slope leading up the hill, he looked back but couldn't see the turtle at all. "Hmph, what did I tell you? It's foolish for a turtle to race a rabbit. Well, I'll take a break here."
