Ukimido, officially known as Kaimon-san Mangetsuji Temple, is a wooden Buddhist hall built to extend into Lake Biwa. Crossing the bridge from the lakeside path, it appears to float on the water, inviting visitors into an extraordinary world. The temple's origins trace back to the Heian period, with the current structure rebuilt in 1937 and extensively renovated in 1982. The warmth of the wood, the sound of the lake's surface stirred by the wind, and the tranquility combine to create a place that calms the mind. In spring, cherry blossoms, and in autumn, colorful leaves adorn the area, especially in the evening when breathtaking views unfold, making it a popular spot for photographers and tourists. Genshin, known for spreading Jodo Buddhism in Japan and authoring "Ojo Yoshu," which advocates the Nembutsu to Amida Buddha, was gazing at Lake Biwa from Hieizan Yokokawa when he saw a golden light on the lake. Curious, he approached the lakeshore and scooped the water with a fishing net, finding a small statue of Amida Buddha glowing golden. Interpreting this as a manifestation of Amida Buddha's vow, Genshin enshrined the statue as the main deity and carved a thousand Amida Buddha statues to place inside the hall. This legend is considered the origin of the current Ukimido, which continues to gather the faith and respect of local people to this day. *Note: This story is passed down as a legend and has not been confirmed as a historical fact.
