Gion Shrine Autumn Festival — Okunchi Festival
On Thursday, October 9th, the Gion Shrine autumn festival, the Okunchi Festival, was held in Kuraoka.⛩
It took place under warm, sunny skies.🌞
Traditional performances were offered, including kagura (a sacred Shinto dance), the usu-daiko drum dance (usu-daiko, a traditional mortar-drum dance), and yamabushi dialogues (exchanges by mountain ascetics).✨
The usu-daiko dance welcomed impromptu participants, and many people joined in.😊
Each time local residents and visitors from other prefectures form a circle and perform the same dance together, I am moved to tears.😭
This year also saw the revival of gankake kagura (a wish-offering kagura).👹
The powerful yet solemn dance, which preserves the original custom called the Festival of Fulfilled Wishes, stirred our hearts.💖
Having kagura performed as a way to make a wish is such a beautiful tradition.✨
Everyone, please come to Gokase's autumn festival next year! Walk-ins and impromptu participants are very welcome.🙌
