Oshino Hakkai, located near Lake Yamanaka at the northern foot of Mt. Fuji, is a general term for the 8 springs there: Deguchi-ike Pond, Sokonashi-ike Pond, Okama-ike Pond, Choshi-ike Pond, Waku-ike Pond, Nigori-ike Pond, Kagami-ike Pond, and Ayame-ike Pond.
Originally, there was a large lake at the northern foot of Mt. Fuji and there is a legend that this lake was later divided into Lake Yamanaka and Oshino Hakkai.

Mt. Fuji garnered faith as a historic spiritual site during the Edo Period.
It's said that in the past, believers of the Mt. Fuji faith would cleanse themselves in the waters of Oshino Hakkai and then ascend Mt. Fuji.
