Nikko Toshogu Shrine in Tochigi Prefecture is a popular spot among Japanese and foreign tourists alike, and is known for its worship of the shogun Tokugawa Ieyasu, the founder of the Edo shogunate.
Eight buildings, including the main building, are designated as national treasures, and in 1999, the shrine was registered as a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
Nikko Toshogu Shrine's shrine pavilions and Yomeimon Gate are adorned with brightly colored carvings.
